Crime Prevention through Environmental Design


The University of Louisville’s Southern Police Institute will host a Crime Prevention through Environmental Design, May 18-21. This KLEC-approved course is based on the concept that proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in both the incidence and fear of crime while also improving quality of life.. Topics covered include:

  • CPTED concepts and principals

  • Behavior and the physical (built) environment

  • Vehicular and pedestrian traffic issues as it relates to access and safety

  • CPTED as a means of economic revitalization

  • Planning process including land use, zoning, codes and ordinances

  • CPTED assessments and plan review

  • Data collection, analysis, presentations and reports

  • Practical exercise involving site visits

  • Discussion of participant issues or local problem
