Performance Management: From Budgeting to Operations


The University of Louisville’s Southern Police Institute will host a Performance Management: From Budgeting to Operations course, May 18-22 at the University of Kentucky Police Department, 152 Transcript Drive in Lexington. This KLEC-approved course introduces two major areas that contribute substantially to managerial success:

  1. Understanding budgetary fundamentals, strategies and challenges as it relates to law enforcement agencies and

  2. Achieving value for money with a budget linked to operational performance.

It is designed to provide participants with an understanding of how organizations can evaluate the achievement of their goals, identify their successes and problems, and respond effectively to them while simultaneously meeting community expectations. Topics covered include:

  • Law Enforcement Trends, Budgeting, Funding Resources, and Costing Services

  • Fundamentals of Financial Projects, Financial Management Performance Measures, and Operational Budget Management Skills

  • Operational Performance: Why is it Important

  • Setting the Stage: Organizational Culture and its Effects on Operational Performance

  • Strategic Planning: Where are We Going?

  • Methods of Managing Operational Performance: Measuring Internally and Externally and Managing Change

  • Staffing your Law Enforcement Agency: Presentation and Practical Exercise
