Protect Your Family: Secure Your Guns

The number of children inadvertently killed or injured by mishandling weapons in the home are staggering. The Department of Criminal Justice Training encourages all officers to carefully consider how their weapons are stored and secured each day. Curious, resourceful children may know more about how to get to weapons in the home than you might think.

Discuss safe weapon handling with your children. Help them learn to respect the weapon and understand its purpose and dangers. Even in light of these conversations, it also is important to remember that any situation where children visit your home and have not had the same training could turn tragic if the weapons are not properly secured.
